Stupid Paper

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I had to do everything for this paper to get it to “first draft” status.  And given its (lack of) behavior in the last 10 days, it looks like I’m going to just have to finish the whole stupid thing myself.  If you can believe it, it’s still exactly where I left it 10 days ago.  Who knows what it’s been doing in the meantime.

Update

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Probably the busiest week of the quarter this week, exacerbated by the fact that I actually tried to enjoy myself over the holiday weekend instead of “getting things done.”  I went to the Melvins/Green River show and then My Baby and I went to the surprisingly sunny Oregon coast and took a cruise in Oregon’s fourth largest estuary.

I did want to update you that my “internship problem” has been solved.  I’ll be working for one of the faculty members over the summer as an RA.  So it’s not really an internship per se, but it can count as one.  In addition, I’m planning to start work on a thesis this summer that I hope I can wrap up in the fall with my final class and get my degree in December.

That’s the rough plan.  We’ll see.

Lazy Paper

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

I’ve got this paper due in a couple of weeks for my speech technology class.  A rough draft is due on Tuesday.  I’ve chosen a topic and written a rough outline.  I’ve downloaded a bunch of relevant papers, read them, and highlighted them.  And despite the fact that I keep putting it last on my to-do list to give it time, the damn thing still hasn’t written itself.

Low: Secret Name

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

In preparation for Sub Pop 20, I loaded up just about every Sub Pop CD I owned to my DMP so I could immerse myself in the performers’ catalogs prior to that show. Since these were albums I owned prior to MPL and my DMP, they never went through a formal review, nor do I plan to formally review them. That means, then, that these albums, along with a bunch of others I’ve loaded up for other reasons, still have all their songs loaded on there, even if they may not all be keepers.

Obviously, this must not stand. So I’m introducing pruning. For albums that were owned prior to my DMP but loaded on because I liked listening to them, I will give them a truncated review, consisting of little more than an estimated rating and the categorization of the tracks, in order to prune off the non-keepers.

The first of these is Secret Name by Duluth’s Low, which, every time I listen to it, strikes me as way better than I remember it being. I love this album.

Estimated Rating:

Mixers
: “Two-Step,” “Missouri,” “Immune,” “Will The Night”
Non-keepers:
“Home”
Filed Between:
Loverboy (Wildside) and The Lucky Stars (Hollywood & Western)

Save The Rhino By Saving A Rhino

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Happy Save The Rhino Day.

If you’ve taken any enjoyment from MPL, please consider donating what you feel is a fair amount to the International Rhino Foundation.   MPL is a losing proposition money-wise.  We have costs (the domain name and the hosting) and make no revenue.  If you could help defray those costs in the form of saving rhinos, though, it’s all good.  As great as rhinos are, they can’t save themselves.

AHOOGA!
